Young Families Prefer Units

Figures show that young families, who do not have the budget for a house, are instead looking at larger apartments as permanent residences. It has been said that more Generation X and Y families are turning away from suburban living which caused the shift in apartment requirements. Salt remembered that families with a one-year-old child would sell up and move to the suburbs.

Salt said that the younger generation is confined in living at inner-city apartments that transferring to the suburbs will have a toll on their lifestyle and living arrangements. This shift in demand will put pressure on apartment property developers to improve on what they are building. A playground might replace gardens that are usually found on the ground level.

Families turning to apartments will increase the demand in child-friendly features. Three-bedroom apartments will also be on the rise as well as access to a communal garden. Some apartment-buying families consist of parents and children in their late teens or early 20s who still want to at close proximity to the city.

It is hard to find affordable three-bedroom apartments but younger couples consider them to be a wise investment because the third bedroom extends the time period that families can stay in the apartment. The median price for an apartment in Sydney went up by 11.9 percent in the last year making the median price $436,000.

This median price makes apartments more affordable than houses as the median house price in Sydney was about $625,000 in the last year, a 13-percent hike compared to last year’s price.

Aside from people looking to downsize, young couples and families with babies or toddlers are looking for apartment properties. In the past five years, there has been an increase in families seeking apartments.
